Text analysis- A Quiet Place

This is my video analysis for the movie, "a quiet place"

The text was an extract from the movie, "The Quiet Place". The filmmaker wanted to show that the setting was an quiet and abandoned city that has been neglected for a long time, that there is no sound allowed to be made and that something bad happened to the city.

Firstly, as said previously as well, the filmmaker made it clear that he wanted to portray the setting of the town as quiet and abandoned. This is proven by the establishing shot/shots that are dominated by long/extreme long shots to show the audience on how vast the town is and how empty and lifeless it is at the same time. The shots in this extract of the movie is dominated with static shots as well further emphasize that there is no single movement at all in the city. The mis en scene also proves this idea further as there is basically no one other then the characters portrayed in the city. The constant dust and cobwebs on every scene suggests that there was no act of care or maintenance in the buildings in the town, possibly for quite a long time. Sound wise, there is no/minimum diegetic sound further indicating that there is absolutely nobody living and present in the town.

Mini self reflection:

This assignment was not that hard for me as I already feel like I have the critical thinking skills, what's missing is that I have to apply more media theories and languages in order to boost my score. In my opinion, the 80 percent that Mr Nick gave to me is considered a,'well done', as going back to the fact that this si my first attempt in the text analysis.

  1. - Great points
    - When you mention mise-en-scene, give examples that support your big idea.
    - Mention what diegetic sounds were used, and how they emphasised the emptiness of the town
