Preliminary Research

This is my preliminary research for my project on component 3, at the start of the project I wanted to research different genre's of music videos and how they convey their message.

Song, Artist

Genre/

Genre Conventions of music videos

What issue/social group was being represented? How was it being represented?

What did you like/dislike about the music video?

Dunia Tipu-Tipu - Yura Yuinta

Indonesian Pop
- Using Indonesian actors

-Song is in the Indonesian languange

-

  • love, was repressented through the presence of families, couples young and old.
  • relationship problems, there were presumably problematic couples being shown in the music videos
  • fixing relationships, there were some couples who ended up crying and apologizing to each other
  • Old people- Old couples were present
  • Kids- kids were present
  • New adults/millenials- they were present in the form of couples.
  • Dads- there were specifically dads in the music video
The concept of the video was very unclear and the scenes did not really explain the goal of the MV

I liked the soft side though, the people comforting each other was a  good sight to see.

Harry Styles (As It Was)

Pop

  • English pop, english singer
  • Romance, songs about romance

  • Relationship struggles (seen through the scene in which a guy was chasing a girl on top of a rotating disc making him unable to catch up)
  • The colours in this music video really contrasts the real lyrics, a colourful music video is weird looking at when the music is sad.
  • I like the performing arts sence of Harry Styles, he was expressive with his movements and expressions.

Jamie T (Zombie)

Indie

  • Indie rock

  • Zombies
  • Death
  • Gore
Funny and creative concept but very unclear on what i can take out of it. No correlation at all.

The Beatles (Now and Then)

Rock

  • Sweet
  • Memoriam
  • memories
  • Friendship
  • Loss
Very creative idea of using AI, overall the whole music video was very sweet as it made John Lennon and George Harrison was brought back to life.
Blinding Lights- The Weeknd- 2020

RnB

Pop

Romance

  • Drugs
  • Ecstasy
  • Confusion
  • Distortion
Very fast paced music video that depicts a drunk The Weeknd roaming down empty streets for some unclear reason. I liked the funny scenes in which he was just standing there opening his mouth with no clear cause. However, this music video somewhat brings up the topic of intoxication which is unsafe.

SELF REFELCTION:
This research was a preview before our big, time consuming and mind burning big genre research. This was helpful as it also gave us an idea of what to identify and write in our major research. This blog also helped us to know outlines of typical genre conventions in music videos and how the music videos convey it through their technical elements etc. A weakness of this is this is too vague as it is only a general research. I feel very good doing this as it gave me a sense of direction of where to go in the project personally.
