Production: Behind the scenes

his post includes pictures of our behind-the-scenes that will show each team member's tasks (roles) in each scene. This post was made by Saka and Nicho.

Nicho setting up a suitable camera angle to film our star’s sad scene

Bagas and Nicho organizing to film the talking scene at school, under the umbrella

All people trying to making the bedroom messy to connote a stressful mood

Bagas getting ready to film our star (Doood played by Bagus) on the rooftop

We didn't have a clipboard so we wrote which scene and the number of takes we were in

Roles:

  1. Bagas: main cameraman

  2. Nicho: the person who did multicam in most of the scenes

  3. Saka: brainstormed and planned, what would happen in the scenes, before filming

  4. Bagus: main actor in all the scenes

Problems:

  • We had trouble with finding a day where everyone has free time

  • Our original actor was another girl but she was busy

  • Weather, rain made it worse for the happy scenes

  • The sunset was never there

  • Time management, whenever we scheduled our filming, one of us are always late

  • Our ball deflated

Solutions:

  • We tried to do as many scenes as we could whenever all of us were present

  • We found another girl actor

  • We try as much as possible to not show the rain

  • We didn't use a sunset scene

  • We try to schedule the time we meet to be 1 hour earlier in case anyone is late

  • We still managed to use the ball, taping the hole and pumped the ball after every scene

REFLECTION:
This blogpost help us to remind our problems and solutions of our project and how we filmed it. It also reminded us morally of how far we have came into studying media. Looking back, its fun to see how we took extreme time and energy out of our lives for this project. Overall, this blogpost itself is easy to make as Saka made it for us.

Branding Research

This is our research for branding, done by Me, Bagus

Choose an artist from your genre

Joji

Find examples of their;

  • Social media

  • Music albums

  • Music videos

  • (Magazine shoots/interviews)

What brand identity are they giving off?

Joji is trying to give off a dark, but humorous and easy going brand image.
In his social media posts he usually posts either dark images of him or basically casual images of him.
But so far in his albums, all of them are dark coded.

What is their persona?

Joji gives off a mysterious persona as he never really posts that much on instagram,

if he does, its usually with little context.

Other than announcing his tours,

where he puts links to his tickets and merchandise.

He just puts random captions or not a caption at all.

In real life, he is pretty funny as he has a lot of fan interactions where he has small jokes with them.

What image are they creating for themselves, how?

He is trying to create a mysterious,

but exclusive image as he does not really post that much on social media and only posts

where it is important and rarely

posts miscellaneous.

But he also wants to be seen as laid back as seen through his random snaps of himself.

He is also trying to create the image that he is a dark,

gloomy being as in his album covers he rarely smiles,

How do they speak to their fans?

He is a former comedian and has a lot of humorous interactions of fans ,

whether at fan meetings and concerts.

He is known to be a very laid back and easy-going person among fans often cracking up jokes at public appearances

What visuals link all of the media products together?

Through colour, Joji wants to create this mysterious and dark being by

combining dark themed filters at his digipaks and his photoshoot for promotions.

And through mise en scene through acting in his album covers, he never smiles.

Making the gloomy impression of himself stronger.

He always uses a black filter on every album cover

Choose an artist from your genre

Billie Eilish

Find examples of their;

  • Social media

  • Music albums

  • Music videos

  • (Magazine shoots/interviews)

What brand identity are they giving off?

Billie's Brand identity is centered around emo,

slow music that focuses on teenage identity,

struggles about life and love life as a young person.

She is giving the brand identity of a teenager who wants to know the world,

but at the same time is handling their struggles.

What is their persona?

Billie has established a simple,

laid back and very friendly and approachable persona on the media.

She is known to have a lot of nice fan interactions all around her tours as when she meets her fans she usually lights up with a smile.

This is also very depicted in her interviews with the media as she shows her presumed genuine personality,

in her products,

she is described as this gloomy girl in a majority of her music videos but in public she has frequently expressed herself using streetwear (baggy clothes) and bright coloured green (her official logo)

What image are they creating for themselves, how?

She is trying to create an image that she is a teenager that

is trying to figure out life through her melancholy music and deep lyrics in her music videos.

But in her public appearances she is this funny, bubbly girl who is wholesome and sweet.

How do they speak to their fans?

She is famous for being a friendly, funny and bubbly kind of person when interacting with fans.

She often makes jokes that are very funny and often connects with fans through

speaking up about social issues together. She joins comedy shows such as SNL (Saturday Night Live) frequently as a guest star,

not as a singer. Only making her singing appearance in 2023.

What visuals link all of the media products together?

As she always brings herself to relate with teenage life darkness such as depression and teenage issues.

She mostly brings herself in her visuals with dark clothing, dark colour alongside dark colour grading in her photos alongside social media.

Her digipaks and album cover do not necessarily contain darkness that is shown explicitly as there are still some bright coded albums. But in all of her cover photos,

she always has a distraught, or crazy expression. Which still conforms to the representation that teens are losing their minds.

SELF REFLECTION

This blogpost that i did was one of the easier parts of the project as we only  needed to find 1-2 artists

to model from, i just found simillar indie artists that we wanted to be model from such as Joji and answered the preset questions that Mr gave us. It lets us learn on how artists brand themsleves through their products and persona

Multicam Editing

In this blog you can find the work I did on how to edit with multiple cameras. My group filmed the footage, but I edited it myself. My teacher provided a template for the blog post.

What is Multicam Editing?

Multicam editing is the process of editing footage of a single scene or subject recorded from different cameras and angles. Showing the same scene or subject from different angles helps make the video more dynamic and visually captivating for your audience

Shooting

Our subject , a classmate, stood in the centre of the room and did a short performance. My group stood around the subject to record the performance from different angles. You can also see members from other groups because we did this lesson as a class. To make it easier to synchronise our cameras, the teacher clapped at the start of the scene. This allowed us to line up the video in the editing process and ensure that the transitions would be smooth. Without this simple action it would have taken a lot longer to sync the videos.

Here are the raw videos from my group members:

2.

3.

My editing process

  • Upload the videos to the editing software (Capcut )

  • Detach the audio of the clip you wish to use in the final video.

  • Find the ‘clap’ marker on the audio.

  • Line up the video files together.

  • Cut where I want the edit to happen

  • Don’t delete the clip, just lower the opacity. This way it can be used again later.

  • Mute all clips except for the one you want to use.

Here is my final edited disasterclass:

Reflection:

The practice of studying how to edit multiple camera angles at once will definitely help me to edit different forms of scenes and create different vibes and pacing to the video. It could also help create meaning to the scene in question. I found ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING challenging about editing, I struggled in fusing the videos together without it blacking out because i somehow reduced the opacity to the parts of the video that i did not intend to ruining everything, i struggled in the organisation of the video and where to split it. The only thing I got right was adjusting the clapping audio and thats it. I found out today that i would never ever edit a video ever again unless if really needed, I took forever on just finishing one piece, while my friends finished it in 20 minutes. I would let Bagas do the editing and Ill focus on the essay writing like we always do.

Media Miniproject

This post contains a mini project that helped us learn how to shoot a music video. We shot our verse as a group and then created this post together.

My teacher gave each group a verse from, " Here Comes The Sun" by the Beatles. We had to plan a scene which included various camera work and edits. The goal was to practice our lip syncing and editing the video to make it match the song.

Pre Production

Here is our storyboard.

Before the process of production, our teacher introduced us to the song that we all have to make a video with and tasked each group with a single, but different verse. In which they have to make a music video that involves lip syncing. We were then instructed to create a quick 15 minute storyboard for the single verse. Originally, we came up with the idea of playing with lighting, making use of our phone flashlights and revolving it over the main character (Bagus) head to make it more emotional and suspenseful on the Mise En Scene, but after a long consideration about how the phone camera would not focus, we decided that it is best for us to create the image that someone progressively getting happier with more people accompanying the main character who is sad. While the main character (Bagus) continues singing as more people enters the scene.

Through sound and Mis En Scene, we instructed Bagus to act sad on the first shot while he lip syncs the lyrics as there is no one accompanying him, with a sad and flat face. But as the lyrics say, "here comes the sun" the scenes in which one by one of Bagus's friends enter and singing along make him progressively happier. In the final scene everyone will gather around Bagus while the music goes on, and he will look very happy and laughing.

Production

During production, we filmed it in an empty bright classroom. First we used a close up camera angle to show that the subject has a straight face while singing. Then as the song progresses, we use a medium shot to show more of his friends singing with him and finally a long shot to show everyone happily singing together while having a great time.

For the edit, we compile the videos and sync it to the song, which is selecting and arranging the clips, so that whenever the lyrics ‘here comes the sun’ is heard, it cuts and adds another subject to the scene.

Post production comments: We edited the video using capcut, we synchronized the song and the video recording. Editing process was fairly easy and short as there are no special effects involved, probably the most challenging part of the work is just synchronising to the music to make it exact. Other than that everything was fine.

Problem:

  • We originally wanted to film in a dark room first and used a flashlight to make it seem like it was the sun. However, after seeing the results, it turned out like a scene from a horror movie so we scrapped that idea.

Solution:

  • We record the scene in a bright room and change the idea to a more simpler one which is to friends singing along with Bagus (our star) and he progressively becomes happier.

Next time what to do:

  • Choose a more simpler plan to do so that we finish filming earlier, can edit as soon as possible and gain feedback from peers.

Reflection
This project was fairly easy as we only had to record a very short video of us lip syncing the Beatles hit song here comes the sun on the chorus, which makes it even easier. The storyboard was quick to make which is a huge relief and nothing wrong went on recording. Everything was easy to record and we'll organized. My contribution would be the fact that i engaged a lot in creating the meaning and concept in adding more people to the shot as I got happier. I'm also the lead actor in this project appearing in every frame and cut.

Shooting Practice Music Video

Theory of Stardom (continuity of classwork)

This is a continuity of the classwork me and Saka did on the Richard Dye's theory of stardom.

Celebrity:

Cristiano Ronaldo Dos Santos Aviero

REEL persona:

What image to they project through their work (films, music, social media)

In his reel persona, Cristiano Ronaldo is shown as very hard working, and an athlete (football player) with an insane work ethic almost like a robot. This is shown through his various posts on social media of him either working out, having a very balanced diet and always showing his muscles. He also frequently posts his pictures of him playing football, and the majority of these pictures are him celebrating wins and goals which gives the impression that he is a very prolific footballer.

In this part of the persona too, he is shown as a family man. This can be seen directly from his profile picture on almost all of his social media platforms that he has, which contains a family picture of his big family, him, his girlfriend and his 6 children.

Also, a part of his reel persona is a sex appeal to women. He frequently posts attractive pictures of himself in designer suits and brands. Also goes back to the fact that he likes to post pictures of his athletic body and muscles which is presumed to be a way of attracting the female audience.

REAL persona:

Have there been any cracks in this image (examples)?

There have been a couple of times where his everyday life was at the spotlight, an example of it was when he was taking his children to school back in 2017. Which was taken by the invasive paparazzi - which shows that he is actually a man that takes care of his family.

Love:

How is their love life reported on?

Before somewhat placing his life on now girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez, Ronaldo was portrayed as somewhat of a playboy. He had a dating stint with Russian model Irina Shayk and a couple of other dating rumors with a lot of other celebrities and models when he was playing in England.

Ordinariness:

Do the media try to show them as everyday individuals like you?

Ronaldo drinking chocolate wine and is looking directly at the camera.

Ronaldo going on vacation with his family.

Success:

What is their success story? How is it told?

His story was told starting from how he came from a poor family, loved playing football at a young age, skipping lessons to play football on the street with his friends, and was a cry-baby since he cried every time he lost/played badly. Then he went on to play in many clubs and gradually climbed his way to being one of the best football players in the world by being extremely disciplined, following a strict diet, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and being the top scorer in his team.

Consumption:

Can you find any articles that celebrate their luxurious lifestyles? Or their extreme diets?

He bought hypercars such as the $9 million Bugatti Centodieci, the $3 million Bugatti Chiron, and the $1 million McLaren Senna.
Also he owns a $70 million Gulfstream G650 jet.

Dream turned sour:

Has this celebrity had a downfall? How is it reported? Did they recover?

He has somewhat experienced a slight downfall for a player his caliber. In summer 2023 just a year and a half after rejoining Premier League club Manchester United FC, he had a downfall with then coach Erik Ten Hag, which led to him leaving the club, after all the drama, no european team wanted him, and he shipped himself to the Saudi Arabian league, a fairly unknown league back then. He was playing far away from his standards in his final stint at Manchester United as well, now only being an Asian standard player after 20 years of dominating europe.

Based on this, we created the persona for
 Bagus (our star)

SELF REFLECTION:
This theory of stardom work really helped us to shape our character persona in the production of the music video (me). It was very helpful as we had a sense of direction of what to make me as in the music video. I contributed on selecting the star (Cristiano Ronaldo) as he is a worldwide icon that fits all of the criteria of the theory of stardom. Overall, this was very easy as we knew our star (Ronaldo) very well.
