Theory of Stardom (continuity of classwork)

This is a continuity of the classwork me and Saka did on the Richard Dye's theory of stardom.

Celebrity:

Cristiano Ronaldo Dos Santos Aviero

REEL persona:

What image to they project through their work (films, music, social media)

In his reel persona, Cristiano Ronaldo is shown as very hard working, and an athlete (football player) with an insane work ethic almost like a robot. This is shown through his various posts on social media of him either working out, having a very balanced diet and always showing his muscles. He also frequently posts his pictures of him playing football, and the majority of these pictures are him celebrating wins and goals which gives the impression that he is a very prolific footballer.

In this part of the persona too, he is shown as a family man. This can be seen directly from his profile picture on almost all of his social media platforms that he has, which contains a family picture of his big family, him, his girlfriend and his 6 children.

Also, a part of his reel persona is a sex appeal to women. He frequently posts attractive pictures of himself in designer suits and brands. Also goes back to the fact that he likes to post pictures of his athletic body and muscles which is presumed to be a way of attracting the female audience.

REAL persona:

Have there been any cracks in this image (examples)?

There have been a couple of times where his everyday life was at the spotlight, an example of it was when he was taking his children to school back in 2017. Which was taken by the invasive paparazzi - which shows that he is actually a man that takes care of his family.

Love:

How is their love life reported on?

Before somewhat placing his life on now girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez, Ronaldo was portrayed as somewhat of a playboy. He had a dating stint with Russian model Irina Shayk and a couple of other dating rumors with a lot of other celebrities and models when he was playing in England.

Ordinariness:

Do the media try to show them as everyday individuals like you?

Ronaldo drinking chocolate wine and is looking directly at the camera.

Ronaldo going on vacation with his family.

Success:

What is their success story? How is it told?

His story was told starting from how he came from a poor family, loved playing football at a young age, skipping lessons to play football on the street with his friends, and was a cry-baby since he cried every time he lost/played badly. Then he went on to play in many clubs and gradually climbed his way to being one of the best football players in the world by being extremely disciplined, following a strict diet, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and being the top scorer in his team.

Consumption:

Can you find any articles that celebrate their luxurious lifestyles? Or their extreme diets?

He bought hypercars such as the $9 million Bugatti Centodieci, the $3 million Bugatti Chiron, and the $1 million McLaren Senna.
Also he owns a $70 million Gulfstream G650 jet.

Dream turned sour:

Has this celebrity had a downfall? How is it reported? Did they recover?

He has somewhat experienced a slight downfall for a player his caliber. In summer 2023 just a year and a half after rejoining Premier League club Manchester United FC, he had a downfall with then coach Erik Ten Hag, which led to him leaving the club, after all the drama, no european team wanted him, and he shipped himself to the Saudi Arabian league, a fairly unknown league back then. He was playing far away from his standards in his final stint at Manchester United as well, now only being an Asian standard player after 20 years of dominating europe.

Based on this, we created the persona for
 Bagus (our star)

SELF REFLECTION:
This theory of stardom work really helped us to shape our character persona in the production of the music video (me). It was very helpful as we had a sense of direction of what to make me as in the music video. I contributed on selecting the star (Cristiano Ronaldo) as he is a worldwide icon that fits all of the criteria of the theory of stardom. Overall, this was very easy as we knew our star (Ronaldo) very well.

Filming schedule

This is the filming schedule that Bagas constructed in order to plan our shooting dates.

Classwork.

These are the classwork that the teacher gave to us in order to understand the concepts and elements of media production. There is also a section in which we studied the theory of stardom in order to know what to apply to our stars. Me and Nicho was tasked to do this part of the project.

CAMERA ANGLES

Here is what we learnt about camera angles in class, I made this table by myself.

Long Shot

Medium Shot

Close Up

Extreme Long Shot

Cowboy Shot

Extreme Close Up

POV

High Angle

Dutch Angle

Over The Shoulder

Low Angle

Establishing Shot

Effects of each shot

Long Shot: Shows the full object alongside the setting and background

Extreme Long Shot: Shows the subject from a more extreme range, will give emphasis more to the setting of the whole movie.

Medium Shot: Allows the audience to see the characters body language, facial expressions and reactions.

Cowboy Shot: Cowboy shots create an effect that makes the character look cool and dominant.

Close Up: Enables the audience to focus on expressions and dialogues.

Extreme Close Up: Enables audience to feel real time emotion of the character

POV: To place the audience in the characters' shoes.

Over the Shoulder: It creates a new point of view that creates a spatial and connectional perspective of the audience and the character

High Angle: Makes subject look weaker and smaller.

Low Angle: Makes the subject look stronger and dominant.

Dutch Angle: Emphasizes confusion and disorientation due to the inconvenient angle.

Establishing shot: Introduces audience to setting of the movie.

CAMERA MOVEMENT

These are the type of camera movements from our teachers' presentation.

These are some videos that helped us understand the aspects of filming

Here is a video that helped us understand mis en scene

What is Mise en Scene — How Directors Like Kubrick Master the Elements of Visual Storytelling

Other than camera angles and camera movements, there are other key elements to creating a suspenseful and meaningful scene. This includes the 3 types of songs diegetic, non-diegetic and trans-diegetic.

Diegetic: Sound that the characters within the media text can hear. This adds a sense of realism and could reveal some information about the character inside the media and soon to the audience.

Non-diegetic: This type of sound can only be heard by the audience instead of the characters. This is used to enhance the meaning of the audience to decode and create an emotional response in the audience.

Trans-diegetic: Trans-diegetic is the type of sound that transitions from one to another, for example from a diegetic sound turning into a non-diegetic sound. A trans-diegetic sound usually helps reflect the character's inner state for

example it may start with a diegetic sound at first to connect with the character’s feelings and soon be heard by the character which is revealed as the character’s internal feeling/experience.

We were also given a video by our teacher in case we wanted to dive deeper into the topic which helped me a lot. As the upcoming projects which were a documentary and a music video needed these skills.

After some more lessons, we learned that there were 3 types of non-diegetic sound.

Description

Effect

Melodie

Positive and pleasing connotations

Enhances a positive scene. Create positive emotions in the audience

DIscordant

Harsh and unpleasant connotations

Enhance negative scenes. Create suspense, tension, and anxiety

Contrapuntal

Has an opposite tone to the on-screen visuals

Adds deeper meaning to scenes. Insight into the character’s thoughts. Maybe they seek pleasure in doing bad things.

These are some examples of all three types of non-diegetic sound.

The fourth key element is the edit. The edit in a media text is crucial as it sets the tone and message and can deliver more impact to the audience.

There are 2 types of editing which are long takes, and short takes each one having a uniqueness and drawbacks of its own.

A long take is used to :

  • Build suspense

  • Makes it feel slow for the audience.

  • Extend the feelings of the scene

  • Makes it more immersive

While a short take is used to:

  • Increase the pace of the scenes

  • Makes it more exciting and high-energy

  • Mostly used to show actions

  • Focuses more on the details

These 2 videos helped me discover more things about the deeper understanding of editing in the media world.

https://youtu.be/OAH0MoAv2CI?si=ebTKXYxE-ilEa82l (Focuses more on the cuts and transitions)

Not only the duration of each scenes but editing can be classified as another 2 which are continuity editing and non-continuity editing.

Examples:

Continuity:

  • Straight cuts

  • Eyeline match

  • Shot/reverse shot

  • Cutaway/insert

  • Match cut

This video helped us understand the deeper level of continuity editing

Non-continuity:

  • Cross cut

  • Flash back

  • Flash forward

  • Jump cut

  • Match cut.

This is the youtube video I found that helped us learn the understanding of a discontinuity editing

SELF REFLECTION:

This classwork really helped me to review and even dig deeper on the technical elements that we are going to use in this music video. This particular work was somewhat time consuming as we had to do research to our old lesson materials and rewrite everything to our understanding (to make sure I and the team actually learn). Time management was our main issue as we did this alongside an upcoming semestral exams. Overall I feel very good doing this as research is my strong point.
