This is a couple of examples and screenshots that I have compiled on double page spreads in sports magazines, particularly basketball magazines.
REFLECTION
This is the worst part of all 3 parts of the magazine that I had to do, this is due to the fact that I have zero sense of design and creativity with the added fact that I have either 2 tests a week (probably on my time management). We had a whole term which did not feel enough due to the fact that there were other classwork, basketball practice and other events that I have to attend, which makes dividing time very hard. The only times that I had to do this was in the 6 hours of media studies we have every week, which I think is very not enough. In short, designing this was hell because of my sense of design.
This magazine on top I also found from someone also doing media studies from 2013, I admit this is not quite what I like as it does not really give enough space for the words. And I am not using only 2 pictures like in this picture.
In my project, I will design my double page spread like this (magazine on top), this will be my first option in making my double page spread, with the images horizontally lined up in the upper parts of the page, with the words on the bottom with the addition of small subheadings before every text.
This magazine on top is not quite clear as I screenshotted it from a youtube video, but as I said, I would not use this due to the fact that I am using 4 pictures
This magazine on top was my inspiration for setting one theme or colour for the background.
This magazine double page spread on top inspired me that I can go simple with the magazine background, with this magazine going for an all Black
EXTRA ANALYSIS:
out of all these screenshots I took from youtube videos reviewing a basketball magazine called SLAM (I do not have it, it is unaivailable in Indonesia) I have took one thing, and it is the fact that they dominantly put bigger pictures but still have a lot of words on their articles.
These are all of my experiments with various styles of double page spread designs from this research that I have done.
As I said, due to the fact that I have 4 pictures, I decided to be inspired by the 2nd picture, I decided to use white as a base to see which colours fit my double page spread, here in this whole design, I have decided to confrom to the last picture on my research. As they used simple colour backgrounds to lay out the double page spread, here, it is still very messed up as its still some kind of rough work to see how it would turn out, the margins and the organisations were all over the place.
On this picture on top, I decided to experiment with blue, before this change, I also asked my teacher whether it was neat or not, turns out, the margins and borders were still everywhere, I was not following them, there were too many rows and columns, plus the fact that one was 1cm and another was 2cms, which made the words go out of place in the first one.
Here on the picture on top, I have decided to experiment with yellow, I also decided to add subheadings so the readers would know which shoes that are on the pictures on top, I decided to use the famously sporty Racing Sans as a main font for my heading and subheading. Now everything looks way more presentable, as according still to the conventions of my research (plain background layout, pictures still stand out)
On this picture on top, I have asked my friends about their opinion on my double page spread, they said that my heading looked too plain, they gave me an idea to make the heading yellow. It looks way better, this also conforms to my colours and themes of my magazine.
I asked another friend, he told me to make the background colour a bit darker blue in order to not make the background really stand out (I hope you see the difference). I have also adjusted the word placement on the magazine in order to match the borders. Something still looks off, which is the page number, way too bottom.
After another opinion session with my friends, I think this would be my final submission, I have made the rating or Vandys verdict into a bigger size font in order for the readers to be able to view it.
*****CHANGE OF PLANS******
I felt like the previous, "final design" was not good enough as I had in inner feeling that it does not really look like a magazine.
I shifted the colour to white, which still conforms with the simplicty of background colours in a basketball magazine (research). Right now, it really looks like a mess as its all far apart, no organization at all of the page, and the unreadable words.
After asking for feedback from my teacher and my friends, they decided that It would be best for me to put the title of the article in the MIDDLE of the page instead of top right/left. This subverts typical magazine conventions, but not basketball magazine conventions. (In the research, some basketball/sports magazine took their title cover to the middle in order to focus more on the subject and topic itself. In my case, I just wanted to make my magazine unique and one of a kind, a new type of design for basketball magazines.
I also reduced the amount of words to make the article readable and accessible to the eyes of the reader, added new text boxes for, " Vandy's Verdict" in order to align it with each other from the other sides.
Therefore, this would be my final result, I am very satisfied with the improvement. I feel very good about this part.
